We’re going to find out tomorrow. We have a plurals test. We learned plural rules a few month ago and this is a review. It should be an easy good grade, but some of them will not study their plurals notes. The notes are on the www.lordalford.com website under Vocabulary. I gave this same test to my son last year when he was in fifth grade. So tomorrow we will see what we will see. J

Dear parents,

Three things:

1. There are two tests this week – one on plurals and one on verb conjugation.

2. The Free Read project is due Friday, Jan. 7. I encourage all students to have it done by this Friday so that it does not hang over their head over Christmas break.

3. Recently I asked you for help and many of you responded. Thank you! Because of this, I will now have 20 new books for my classroom. This was so successful, that I thought I would try once more in the Yahoo for Homepages contest. This time we are going for 11 graphic novels. The more high interest materials I have in my classroom, the more our students will develop better reading skills. This will cost you NO MONEY – only two minutes of your time. I did this a few weeks ago and have gotten no spam or e-mails except one follow up e-mail thanking me for supporting a project in Donors Choose. You can do this as many times as you have an e-mail and it must be done by FRIDAY. If all of us did it once, it would help tremendously. If we all did it two or three times, we’d win again.

All you need to do:

Go to http://www.yahoo.homepagesforhomerooms.com/

Click FIND A PROJECT TO SUPPORT.

Click PROJECT ID (this is found in the middle of the page)

Enter 484817 into the project id box

Click Support This Project.

In the new window, look at the first thing – Change Your Homepage to Yahoo – click the link that says click here

Then choose the last option – Add this webpage to your home page tabs

Enter your e-mail address twice, click the box, and enter the security words.

That’s it! Total time – 2 minutes. Thanks!

If you don’t want it there anymore, just click TOOLS on your internet browser, scroll to the bottom of the menu and choose INTERNET OPTIONS. There you can just delete the Yahoo.com on your homepages. Easy!

Study for the Arabian Nights test. How? By reading the "Fisherman and the Genie" and practicing with "The Fifth Voyage of Sinbad." You can find these on our web site (www.lordalford.com).

Here are the answers to "The Fifth Voyage of Sinbad":

1. a. is incorrect as it really doesn't teach us a lesson (which is what teaches us a moral means).

b. is correct, since it is only meant for us to enjoy

c. and d. are both incorrect since the story doesn't really address either of these

2. a. is correct - the guys had just started to roast the birds, so it makes since that they would make a meal out of them.

b. not too bad of an answer, but doesn't fit the roasting comment made in the sentence above it

c. nowhere does it give us a hint that they might take a nap.

d. they are doing horrible things, so good deeds is completely wrong

3. This is pure plot level. You could go back to paragraph two and find the answer, which is, of course, d.

4. a. is correct. Each answer after that gets more and more ridiculous.

5. a. is incorrect. It is a metaphor, but it uses like to make the comparison, so it is not a metaphor.

b. is incorrect - there is no reference being made to another story.

c. is incorrect - there is no play on words here.

d. is correct. It is a comparison using the word like.

6. d. is correct. Anytime you see a piece of writing in paragraph form, it will be prose.

7. We want to keep all verb tense the same, so b. is the correct answer.

8. Since Sinbad has gotten shipwrecked every time he went out, we can predict that he will get shipwrecked again in the next two stories. The correct answer is a.

9. d. is correct.

No homework, but we do have a quiz tomorrow. I would want to know setting, verbal irony, round and flat characters, and 3rd person limited and 3rd person omniscient points of view. If you know these things, you'll make at least an 80 on the quiz. The extra credit is going to be knowing what MLA stands for.

Finish class work. Depending on what order you did your work, you may have vocabulary list one (check the website, I may have it up already), the short story "Speak" and the questions written on the board, and the Spider-Man grammar sentences (write HV over the helping verbs, LV over the linking verbs, and AV over the action verbs).

Bring something to read tomorrow if you have it.

If you didn't bring in supplies for extra credit, but would still like to, I'll take them tomorrow.

Hello Parents and Students,

I am going to try and keep up with homework here on the homework blog. This way students can find what they forgot to write down and parents can stay in touch. This is my first time trying this, so I will try hard not to fall behind. I do not usually give a lot of homework and much of what we have is what was not finished in class. You may post and responses you would like here and I will see them and respond if needed.
